i9’s from 2022 and 2023 – Which vintage is better?
We have already been able to compare 13900K(F) and 13900KS CPUs in the past – if you missed the article and the data, here is the link:
The last and fastest of their kind – Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake Binning | Part 3: i9-13900KS
Now it makes sense to compare the new binning data with the old data and simply see if anything has changed. Since the number of CPUs of these SKUs from 2022 was significantly larger, I have normalized the quantities relative to the respective total quantity, so that the columns here do not show absolute numbers, but percentages. This makes it a little clearer.
Let’s start with the 13900KS, which has effectively been replaced by the 14900K with effectively the same specs. However, we remember that these CPUs were produced at the same time and in the same place as the new 14 i9 variants. And indeed, the 13900KS was slightly better in 2022 with 108.1 total SP on average. The new CPUs from this year, on the other hand, are at 106.4, i.e. 1.7 total SP less on average. although there were also more worse CPUs in 2022, there were also more better CPUs, while the field became somewhat narrower overall in 2023.
And is there a noticeable change in the 13900K or 13900KF? Well, the most common total SP value of 97 has remained the same. In 2022 there were more worse CPUs, but also more better CPUs than this year. The most interesting thing is probably the average value, which actually fell from 100.2 in 2022 to 98.6 in 2023, i.e. by 1.6 points. All 3 SKUs have therefore become slightly worse over time in terms of silicon quality. However, it remains to be seen whether this is reliable on the one hand and relevant on the other. After all, anyone who wants to buy an i9 in 2023 will probably go for the newer 14th generation model anyway. However, anyone looking for a 13th-generation chip with good OC potential for whatever reason will have a slightly better chance with a 2022 model.
