Disassembling and tracking
Now comes the moment of truth, because I disassemble the card again. We see the traces of the “torn off” Thermal Putty standing up like little cherry on top. If you’re afraid you’ll never get this paste off again: Don’t worry, it’s easy to push it off with a spatula. The rest can be done with an ear stick (in the crevices) and a little isopropanol if necessary. You can also collect the pushed together putty, press it together and even reuse it. This is really sustainability in action, because normal pads pressed together by the components are usually completely worthless afterwards.
Let’s now take a closer look at the board and the certain spots to also do a little error analysis. We remember the one, somewhat hotter RAM module and have a look at the spot. It is the second module from the bottom on the right side in the middle row and it shows once again clearly: Wrong stinginess takes revenge. There is simply too little putty on it! Stinginess is really uncool and the Putty costs less than an expensive single pad in only one thickness.
We do the whole thing again as a counter test on the radiator bottom (heatsink). Here the spot is on the left, but at the same vertical position. Yes, it is definitely a bit too little. Well, even I make mistakes now and then. Misunderstood frugality and lack of experience. Now I know better.
Summary and conclusion
So, it doesn’t always have to be expensive pads, whose thickness usually has to be scrutinized beforehand. Especially with older hardware, such an exchange can quickly become a total economic loss. The Thermal Putty tested today is exactly the right solution for such a situation. The thermal paste is usable, but a bit too liquid for my private taste. But it doesn’t target any threads and doesn’t run out, which is at least reassuring. The card is running again and I will of course continue to monitor everything.
If the whole text was too long or if you want to see me tinkering and rebuilding, I recommend my live video. There is always something and stinginess is not always cool! In this sense: Some more Putty on the memory! You don’t treat yourself to anything else…
