Summary and conclusion
The Asus Maximus Z790 Hero can do almost everything you could want in a pairing for an LGA1700 CPU, and does nothing wrong either. Personally, I would have preferred to see a Safeboot button and dual-BIOS and trade in Thunderbolt 4 instead, but we are not on the feature bazaar on the one hand and on the other hand such preferences are of course always dependent on the respective user and use case. Users with Thunderbolt devices and who only occasionally dare to overclock should be quite happy with the board as it is.
But especially when it comes to overclocking, be it CPU or RAM, the “entry-level” model of Asus’ Maximus Z790 product series can also convince. Of course, the silicon lottery plays a big role here, but the motherboard also has to do its part and the Hero does that extraordinarily well. With a good IMC, DDR5-7800 with 2x 16 GB SK Hynix 16 Gbit A-Die modules can be operated so reliably and with repeatable stability that the system could be used for daily operation without any problems. You can’t even say that about many 2-DIMM motherboards, which theoretically still have an advantage in RAM OC with fewer slots – yes, I’ve tested a few. The Z790 Hero can also deliver very good results in CPU OC and the power supply even partly outperforms much more expensive motherboards.
Likewise, hardly any wishes remain unfulfilled in terms of interfaces and expansion options. Up to 5 PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs at the same time, 21 USB ports of various designs and speeds including 60 W QuickCharging, integrated Thunderbolt 4, 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 – the list goes on and on. Considering the technical limitations of the Z790 platform, Asus has implemented almost everything possible here; maybe apart from 10 Gbit/s Ethernet or DisplayPort-in ports for Thunderbolt, but with such features we are already in the workstation area.
The Asus Maximus Z790 Hero has everything a gamer’s and overclocker’s heart desires. At around 600 Euros, it is one of the more expensive high-end boards for Intel’s current mainstream socket, but you also get corresponding performance and 4 DIMM slots for the price. A more reliable base for Raptor and Alder Lake CPUs is currently not known to me, especially for all those who want to use their heavily overclocked system on a daily basis without being surprised by unexpected bluescreens. So for enthusiasts and gamers in the high-end segment, the Z790 Hero should be at the top of the list of motherboard options.
The motherboard was kindly provided by Asus. There was no obligation to publish. Furthermore, there was no influence on the tests and their results.
