Samsung’s high-end 980 Pro and 990 Pro SSDs have been affected by rapidly decreasing quality issues lately. The company already released a firmware update for its 980 Pro SSDs some time ago and has now provided a similar solution for its latest flagship storage solution.
Samsung initially declined warranties and RMA for its 980/990 Pro-series SSDs, stating that the performance loss was within normal operation. However, the company responded to the strong reactions of its many customers and released a firmware update for its older 980 Pro SSDs. The new 990 Pro SSDs, which were introduced just a few months ago, exhibited similar issues. The problems were not only confirmed by Samsung, but they could also be reproduced in their own lab. Initially, these issues were classified as anomalies related to SMART Percentage Used (in Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) for the 990 Pro SSDs.
Samsung has now published the following update on this topic on its official community page:
Hello everyone,
Samsung has been investigating customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART of the 990 PRO SSD.
These anomalies were found to be caused by issues with the 990 PRO SSD’s firmware.accordingly, a firmware update was released today, February 13, 2023, that fixes these anomalies.
(SMART values are not restored to factory settings after firmware update. Actual SMART values of each SSD vary depending on user environment and usage conditions).
The update can be downloaded from Samsung Magician or here:

You can find our warranty conditions for the 990 PRO SSD athttps://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/support/warranty/.
While it’s certainly good to hear that Samsung has provided a fix to save more users from experiencing the same issues with their 990 Pro SSDs, it’s not necessarily any help to existing users who have lost the majority of their drives. Samsung still has to provide affected users with a replacement SSD, and we hope the process goes smoothly for consumers and not the way we initially saw it.
