Efficiency evaluation
Now let’s move on to the efficiency evaluation, as the amount of watts needed to achieve a certain gaming performance in terms of FPS as a metric in watts per FPS. This is the opposite of what the manufacturers like to use, but I think it is much easier to use the larger numbers before the decimal point. And because I don’t want to force you to use a calculator, the calculation is included as a bar-graph service for free. We can see that the MSI RTX 4080 SUPRIM X is almost as efficient in QHD as NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 FE.
And what happens now in Ultra HD? The MSI RTX 4080 SUPRIM X has to work much harder and is also hardly limited by the CPU. This reduces the efficiency somewhat, but the gap to the VU is not huge. However, the more optics (LED) is slightly noticeable in a negative way. Okay, that’s complaining at a very, very high level.
Various processes can also be used to make Ultra HD more playable, but how does this affect efficiency? Since the new Tensor cores in particular have to do a bit more work, the MSI RTX 4080 SUPRIM X is also slightly behind the Founders Edition in terms of efficiency. But that is not really much and can be tolerated very well in view of the performance and low operating noise.
Summary and conclusion
Whether you find the 16 voltage converters on the 8 phases for the GPU better than the 13 single phases of the Founders Edition remains to be seen. But it’s a nice nice-to-have that also alleviates some of the possible tinnitus from coil whining. You get a tidily designed and, within the scope of your needs, very purposefully equipped PCB with everything that the market has to offer in the middle drawer. There are no conspicuous features and the somewhat jittery fan curve, which is also somewhat influenced by the temperature curve, is hardly perceptible acoustically.
Visually, the card fits into the SUPRIM design language and I see the simplicity of the design language as more of a plus. The overall performance is free of criticism and the MSI RTX 4080 SUPRIM X is thus certainly also one of the fastest and quietest RTX 4080 cards currently available on the market. If it weren’t for the completely exorbitant price. The already high ex-factory purchase price for the distribution (thanks to NVIDIA for the overly high RRP) is then added to by a hefty scalper surcharge from the retailer, which almost makes you reach for the mental knife and presses the will to buy into negative areas.
Therefore, I cannot give a purchase tip here with the best will in the world, because the current prices are downright absurd, even though the RTX 4080 is sufficiently available in various variants. Or better: exactly because nobody buys it and these cards materialize into lead. Therefore, there is at least the Editor’s Choice as a substitute, because MSI has actually done everything right with the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPRIM X, only struggling with an unacceptable price at the wrong time.
But that’s not the manufacturer’s fault, because producing at a loss would be outright suicide. So please chip prices down and sanction the trade. Every customer can even do this by expressing his or her opinion through (non-)purchasing behavior. Then, hopefully, it will become cheaper again. More than 2000 euros for this card in places is already a nasty caricature of the German market. With the best will in the world, you can’t find that good or normal anymore, it’s just outrageous.
The graphics card was provided by MSI for this test. The only condition was compliance with the blocking period; there was no influence or remuneration.
