Temperatures
Of course, a feel-good atmosphere cannot be assumed here. Power comes from fuel – and where a lot of electricity goes in, heat comes out in the end. All notebook manufacturers are struggling with this. Especially, with such potent hardware in such a small space. That’s where it gets equally difficult for everyone. This is how the temperatures look after 30 minutes of Cinebench R23.
The CPU is already throttled – despite full fan speed. This is what it looked like after over an hour of gaming benchmarks.
The maximum boost clock of the RTX 3080 Ti (notebook) was just over 2 GHz. Depending on the game and temperatures, however, it also falls down the cellar stairs quite quickly. The GPU temperature – with a maximum of 78 °C – was still okay. The Intel Core i9-12900HX suffers the most. But you also have to see that I didn’t just test one game here. Something was constantly changed, out of the game – into the game, save data, start a new game, etc. So it was real stress for the MSI Raider.
Volume
That always casts its shadow ahead with such gaming laptops. You have to know that when you buy something like this. I don’t know of any laptop this potent that jumps out of the manufacturer’s box as quiet as a whisper. At idle, ok, but anyone can do that. Since I don’t just want to say, “Oh, that’s loud,” I also measured the whole thing. At least with the means at my disposal. Measuring distance 50 cm perpendicular to the fan on the right. All other PCs were off!
After 30 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077, the fans whistled the symphony of destruction. There were almost 52 dB and it is really loud because the fans produce a high-frequency noise. Maybe MSI should release the Raider as a bundle. According to the motto: If you buy a Raider, you get the matching headset with Enhanced Noise Cancelling for free. With the MSRP or the street price, that would almost be appropriate.
Webcam, microphone and speaker
The webcam is perfectly sufficient for teams, Skype or Zoom. If you want more, you can’t get around your studio equipment. This also refers to the microphone.
The built-in microphone works, and if you use the combo jack, you also get a bit better sound – both in and out. The speakers are not bad at all for a notebook. At least, I could not perceive any scratching or other disturbing noises. So there is no feedback. Still, my recommendation: The Sharkoon Gaming DAC Pro S for those who want to enjoy sound with analog headphones (headset). Wireless is of course possible via Bluetooth or with the corresponding dongle. You should always think about ANC or closed over ear headphones in connection with a gaming laptop. The things just get loud.
External monitor
This is possible via USB-C or Thunderbolt, which function as DisplayPort, as well as via HDMI. So it’s not a problem. Here you can see the MSI Oculux NXG253R, connected via HDMI. This is “only” 240 Hz FHD, but in 24″. The monitor is also recognized as a G-Sync monitor via HDMI. The times of DisplayPort only in combination with G-Sync are also over.
Thus, you can put the Pustefix – with its 52 dB – quite a bit away. It immediately becomes much quieter.
According to the motto: Nice OLED panel… But for the necessary seating distance to escape the background noise – the display is much too small. 🙂
But now it’s time for a conclusion. Last page…
