Summary and conclusion
Hmm, where is the best place to start here? I’ll try it one at a time. We saw that the RTX 4090 in Call of Duty Black Ops – basically retires the RTX 3080 Ti in UHD. I’ll spoil it in advance: Without ray tracing, the RTX 4090 is a real monster with max settings. A close look at such games in terms of FPS, latencies and DLSS etc. will come. But it is really impressive what NVIDIA delivers here. For eSports enthusiasts, the brute raw performance of the RTX 4090 alone, combined with DLSS and Reflex – sets new standards. UHD and 240 Hz for titles like CoD are no longer fiction – it’s reality. Likewise, 1440p and 360 Hz monitors are easily feasible here.
I wouldn’t play games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider without ray tracing now. Turn on DLSS Quality and enjoy a very cool story game on UHD at 144 Hz. This can also be applied to other AAA titles. There is nothing more to say against DXR on and when DLSS 3.0 comes into play, the whole thing is almost a no-brainer. Cyberpunk on UHD with maximum ray tracing and DLSS 3.0 quality makes 111 FPS possible. Yes, the latency is a bit higher for this, but still far from becoming a problem in terms of input latency.
Intel comes along almost stealthily with XeSS, and interferes with – or rather does not interfere with – the launch of the RTX 4090. Intel probably thought that this would somehow be lost. Not at IgorsLab. XeSS: Graphically quite ok, but the FPS increases are rather modest with XeSS:! DLSS is still the best upscaling technology on the market. NVIDIA doesn’t even need DLSS 3.0 to put the fear of God into Intel or AMD. Speaking of DLSS 3.0, NVIDIA has really hit the ground running. It’s impressive how much more performance you can get out of the RTX 4090 when you unload the CPU thanks to DLSS 3.0. The image quality is on a native level up to the Performance level – usually even better.
The RTX 4090 ran completely relaxed, cool and quiet during my tests here. This was much louder, hotter and annoying at the same time in the RTX 3080 FE. The RTX 4090 puts a big fat exclamation mark. The RTX 4090 is the first graphics card with which you can really utilize a high refresh rate monitor in UHD – with high settings. The performance of the RTX 4090 is – and there is no other way to put it: Brutal. Running this card with an FHD monitor is an insult! The absolute minimum is a 1444p 240 Hz or even better 2160p 144 Hz monitor.
What impressed me the most, almost shocked me: The fact that there is still no CPU for the RTX 4090 that will match its performance. An Intel Core I9-13900K first has to show what kind of silicon it is made of. The assumption is that this GPU needs an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. So please AMD, let the X3D CPUs go. Urgent.
With all the euphoria regarding the RTX 4090, which I also have in the meantime, I can only hope that AMD also manages to make a big leap forward with the 7000 GPUs in terms of prices and competition. AMD has to do something about ray tracing in particular. AMD also has to make sure that they don’t lose touch with FSR right away. In any case, it remains an exciting fall.
The RTX 4090 FE was provided to me by NVIDIA for these tests. The only condition was to comply with the NDA (embargo period). There was no influence on the tests and results. There was also no reimbursement of expenses!
