In keeping with the theme of prepayments, back payments and heating costs, this time I subjected myself to a self-financed and rather involuntary self-experiment. Almost 4,000 euros more in advance per year should actually be enough to get rid of old carelessness and accept the additional costs for the purchase in return. At current prices, the whole thing could pay for itself in the first year. Our homeowner continues to heat with gas, although district heating is now available. Well, of course you can get angry and upset about that, but you can’t change it for the time being. That leaves only self-help.
Now, unfortunately, I am busy and had also somewhat suppressed the necessary procurement. Two of the FRITZ! Dect 302 from AVM I had already bought a long time ago and even then I paid almost 70 euros – per piece. Well, and then I had lost sight of that again for a while. Buy more? Let’s put it this way, the parts are the new graphics cards and F5 is well worth it if you want to save a bit and not wait long. Meanwhile, we have reached around 100 Euros on the market, which is actually already an unacceptable amount. My meanwhile 8 pieces cost me on average just under 80 euros including shipping. Expensive, but just about justifiable. I also want to make it clear that everything was bought with our own money and that there was no sample sponsoring by AVM. Just under 640 euros for a few lousy controllers and the dealer (Scalper) laughs at you.
If you’re now wondering why I didn’t buy cheaper competitor products, the answer is pretty quick: Because on the one hand, I didn’t want a cloud-based solution anymore, and yet I didn’t want to do without the convenient app control in parallel with a clear web interface! I was able to remove the first smart thermostats from 2020 after just under 7 months – the Chinese provider had simply switched off the server. Cloud dead, controller dead. Long-distance death, then. Alibaba is nice and cheap, but it just wasn’t worth the risk to me. And yes, I admit it: there’s a bit of paranoia there now, too. And this is exactly where AVM’s radiator thermostats come into play. A maximum of 12 of them can be connected to my FRITZ!Box 4060 can be connected.
And no, perfect is such an AVM FRITZ! Neither does the Dect 302, because there is a lot that has not been thought through to the end. But it’s a workable and now also very expensive compromise that I grudgingly accepted anyway. Well, the yellowed old manual controllers were also overdue and I’m tired of constantly rushing back and forth between floors and, for example, manually tempering the lab early in the morning before work, securing the eating temperature in the kitchen for the kids (so that the cocoa doesn’t freeze in your hand) and cooling down the bedroom to idle mode during the day after sleeping. At the same time, you need to pay attention to the dew point and do not bring mold into the house by too much false stinginess. All this together is already a half-time job, which I would like to share further. So now I have to have fritzing.
Scope of delivery
So you really don’t get much, but what do you need? There is the Dect 302 preloaded with three AAA batteries, a kind of Quick Start Guide and a Danfoss RA adapter (with screw and nut). However, with this one exception, the union nut fits all common radiators, which is already good. But here, too, the devil is in the details! I’ll have to say a few more words about this in a moment, but it’s all still very easy to implement if you think along a bit and know what’s important beforehand.
The part weighs a whole 150 grams and is not too heavy. The dimensions, especially the length of 9.3 cm, have thankfully been based on common manual thermostats, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to check the available space, especially when planning installation in niches. Here, approx. 2 cm must also be added for secure mounting. And with a bit of bad luck, that can be really tight. I’ll say something more about the batteries in a moment, but here is the data sheet first, which saves me another text wall:
We’ll see right away that the mechanical installation is a breeze and the setup is quick as well. That’s exactly why I chose the Dect 302, because I’m a lazy bastard and still really oldschool. I still prefer a clear web interface (with mouse and keyboard) to the whole hip app cloud smartphone thing.
