Overall conclusion regarding the monitor basics
So what does it come down to? First, you have to choose a resolution (native) that your hardware is capable of displaying at the desired FPS. In my opinion, 1440p (both 16:9 and 21:9). This then brings us to the screen size. This is related to the PPI and should be made dependent on the seating distance. In my view, a 4K resolution on a 15″ display is just as impractical as 1080p on 32″. In my opinion, the most common screen size is 27″. You can work well on it and this size is also really good for gaming.
Second, the choice of the panel. To be honest, I have to say: If you don’t care about colors and color spaces, you’ll probably buy a TN panel with backlight strobing ala DaYc. Yes, I have deliberately omitted strobing. Maybe I’ll do an extra article on this sometime. If you need a large color space coverage, you will not get around an IPS panel. If you place a lot of value on black or contrast, you will end up with a VA panel. Or QD OLED right away? Rec. 2020 up to 90 %, a real response time of 1 ms. No overshoot! However, it is a bit difficult when it comes to text display. Burn-in should also be kept in mind. It is also always a question of budget.
Third, high refresh rates from 144 Hz upwards. What else is important? Well watch out for the response time of the pixels in connection with overshoot. We are already back to OLED panels, ok, or very good LCD monitors. The best LCD monitors are far from what an OLED display can do. At the latest when it comes to HDR, the wheat is separated from the chaff and the man from the monkey. Therefore my wish to the industry: 27″ inch 1440p 240 or 360 Hz and 27″/34″ 2160p 144 or 240 Hz OLED monitors – affordable – means max. 1.000 Euro!
And fourth, and that’s all for now. Upscaling pushes your FPS, use adaptive sync if possible and things like NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag should always be considered. But that’s it for today. Thank you so much to you guys for taking this foundation journey with me. If there are any questions, feel free to ask via the forum. See you later…
