Now let’s look at the consequences of heating due to the electrical power absorbed and the effort required to then regulate the whole thing via air exchange. Of course, I am also interested in the noise level of what is emitted as complex fan noise from the three small fans. Whether gaming or torture, the temperature curves look very similar at first. The card in the closed configuration acts quite chilled thermally, with the speeds varying around 2200 rpm (gaming) or slightly below (torture) in both scenarios. We already know that the card consumes slightly less power in the stress test. The fans are controlled semi-passively with a short start-up pulse.
Now we come to the suffering noise level and the sound character. With about 34.3 dB in the gaming loop and about 134 watts, I measure a much too high value of the really obtrusive propellers. This is a whopping 12 dBA above the MSI card’s value at the same load! Yes, the MSI card runs a few degrees warmer, but nevertheless faster and it also remains thermally absolutely in the green zone. You can see very well on the frequency analysis in the picture below the airflow from about 2 KHz with a peak between 2.2 and 2.25 KHz, which corresponds exactly to the applied speeds. In addition, there is the motor and bearing noise of the three fans from about 250 Hz.
Problem solving and workaround
You could push the operating noise down to an ample 37 dBA (a whopping 5 dBA less) if you could come to terms with around 70 to 72 °C by adjusting the fan curve accordingly and then slowing down the three loud whisperers a bit more noticeably with around 1600 to 1700 rpm. In gaming, the uncooled memory VRM would still stay below 80 °C, the other VRMs below 75 °C. In a closed configuration, mind you. Only the boss knows why Gigabyte pushes the fans so aggressively. In any case, I wouldn’t have taken the card with such a fan curve. Cost down or not, there are unfortunately not only geographical but also acoustic boundaries. That’s some well-intentioned advice.
