Practical test: Connections, functions and battery life
As always, the test object was put through its paces, and due to the large range of functions, this time the test lasted a long time.
Gaming
Here I still rely on good old Counter-Strike Global Offensive. Not distracted by lush vegetation or special effects, the acoustic localization of the enemy is even more important here than in Battlefield and Co. where you often didn’t even realize where you were shot from in the end. Even if the weapons don’t sound as “full” as on the thick system with subwoofer, the location of the enemy players is much more precise and especially with the H3pro Hybrid very well possible. In this respect, it is, also by the enormous shielding of the “outside world” already quite far ahead with it. For the right “bombast sound”, e.g. during big explosions or theatrical cutscenes in AAA games, the standard setting lacks some low frequency sound, which will also be discussed in the next point.
Music
Unlike the boss, I’m probably a touch less of an audiophile and instead of classical music I prefer to test with Fleetwood Mac. Especially the song “World Turning” has a lot to offer for me – vocals, guitars, bass and a kick drum of death. By default, the vocals come across pretty muffled, the sound is generally a bit tinny (the typical “gaming” setting) and the kick drum lacks punch. Unfortunately, the equalizer of the included EPOS Gaming Suite didn’t really help, which is why I later used the program “Equalizer APO”. I’ll get into both of these at a later date.
Movies
For this I also used the next connection option: Bluetooth. In no time, the headset was connected to the Samsung TV. Press the pairing button until you hear the confirmation, select the headset on the TV and you’re done. Voices are rendered properly and it took me a moment to detach myself from the reportage on polar bears that was currently running. Movies can also be enjoyed quite well with the H3pro Hybrid on the TV, but you shouldn’t expect too powerful effects. There is clearly missing the equalizer again, or the unused potential of the device.
ANC – Active Noice Cancelling
Against expectations, I have to go into more detail about the ANC function at this point. What I always thought was more marketing is actually a real thing in practice. With ANC activated, background noise such as typing on a mechanical keyboard, friction noise caused by movement and other disturbing noises are significantly attenuated and in some cases even completely cancelled out. At lower volumes and when gaming, this is a very useful and pleasant thing for which I would definitely put up with the shortened battery life, at least in certain scenarios.
Reception and range
In terms of range, the EPOS headset is right on par with the competition. Connected with the enclosed wireless dongle, I had no dropouts to report in the entire OG. On the ground floor, the connection breaks off and is only re-established in the kitchen, where there is “only” a wall and a ceiling between the receiver and the headset. But then I was surprised by the Bluetooth connection with the TV, because it remained in the whole house without interruptions, even through three walls and a ceiling!
Battery Life
To measure battery life, I connected the headset to the PC via wireless dongle and left the ANC disabled because I think this combination is the most realistic scenario. After 24 hours of playing games, listening to music (sometimes very loudly) and using voice chat at the same time for almost half the test duration, there was still over 20% battery left. The manufacturer’s specifications don’t seem to be too far from reality in that respect and they certainly impressed me. So far, I haven’t had a wireless headset in use that has easily churned out well over 20 hours of battery life.
