Evaluation
Because I couldn’t look at the already not very accurate measuring device at every game scene at the same time, I used the Unigine Superposition Benchmark for the concrete measurement at the socket and paused it. So I could provide exactly the same workload for all settings and read the following values. To be able to make a judgement about the chosen settings, I calculated how many watts each frame costs.
Summary
As expected, a great saving could be achieved with the graphics card in question. While simply lowering the power limit reliably lowers the power consumption, the suboptimal power curve also causes the performance to drop a bit.
Optimizing the frequency curve yielded significantly better results. For me, it’s always the ideal solution if I can significantly reduce consumption without losing power. In the example, depending on the game and load, that’s a whopping 50-60 watts you can save.
Of course, you can also use the leeway to coax some more performance out of the graphics card with roughly identical consumption. Specifically, the 3070 Ti here stably reached 2GHz while still remaining minimally below stock consumption. However, in my opinion, the increase in performance is not really worth the additional consumption and the higher noise level compared to the “ideal solution”.
Conclusion
So it’s worth looking into this issue with the RTX 3070 Ti as well. Without any loss of power, 50W can be saved, which may not make up the lion’s share of the electricity bill at the end of the year, but will save your ears a lot of money. If the Ti suddenly has only 30W more consumption than the non-Ti variant after optimization, then it is suddenly not so unattractive. However, you shouldn’t forget that you’ll certainly be able to save a few watts on the “normal” RTX 3070 as well.
