An Intel Core i9 11900K CPU on a Maximus XIII Apex motherboard from Asus is used as the test platform. The CPU is not manually overclocked for this and only the Adaptive Boost Technology is activated to achieve the highest possible clock rates in all situations. The cache clock is statically increased to 4.5 GHz to ensure the best possible connection to the memory. The BIOS version used is 1007, which is the latest at the time of testing.
But I also didn’t want to pass up the chance to take our AMD Ryzen platform for a spin with a 5950X CPU on a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro v2 motherboard, which is best suited for high RAM clock speeds with its optimized daisy chain 4-DIMM layout. The CPU is operated with Precision Boost Overdrive and an Infinity Fabric clock of 1900 MHz. The BIOS version used is F13, which is the latest at the time of testing.
As always, a complete listing of the hardware used follows here:

For comparison, I have included G.Skills DJR-based DDR4-5066 CL20 variant from the last test into the graphs in addition to the well-known Samsung B-Die based DDR4-4000 CL15 modules. Depending on the platform, I’ve chosen the best performing configuration in gaming here to serve as the most meaningful and fair reference possible. Below you will find a gallery of reference configurations with all timings:
As usual, some abbreviations have been used in the diagrams for better readability, which are explained below with examples:
- 4400c19: Specified clock rate DDR4-4400 or 4400 Mbps with 2200 MHz and tCL timing 19
- 5066 18-23-23-42: Operating clock rate DDR4-5066 with primary timings tCL 18, tRCD 23, tRP 23 and tRAS 42
- 1T, 2T, GDM: Command Rate with 1 tick, 2 tick or Geardown mode on the AMD platform with even tCL timing
- 1:1, 1:2: Transmission on the AMD platform between memory controller clock (UCLK) and main memory clock (MCLK)
- Gear1, Gear2: Transmission on the Intel platform between memory controller clock and memory clock
- RevB, B-Die, DJR: Memory chips installed on these memory modules – Micron 16 Gbit RevB, Samsung 8 Gbit B-Die or SK Hynix 8 Gbit DJR
- 5950X, 11900K: CPUs used on the test platform – AMD Ryzen 9 5950X or Intel Core i9-11900K
