Optics and haptics
To come to the low weight of only 69g, the mouse is completely made of plastic. The polymer has a slightly rough surface, so that a secure grip is possible even in summer temperatures and slightly sweaty hands.
In terms of design, the Prime is not particularly striking and is kept very simple. Small cutouts next to the pads are supposed to make replacement easier, so why not include replacements then? On the bottom of this version of the mouse is otherwise only the DPI button with 5 profiles.
There isn’t much exciting to see in the side view: There are two thumb keys on the left side, the rest of the mouse is “blank”. Although the seams between the individual parts of the mouse are visible, they were not annoyingly noticeable during use.
If the position of the side buttons hasn’t made it clear yet, a look from the front and back at the latest shows that the Prime Mouse is also designed for righties and has been ergonomically shaped accordingly.
According to Steelseries, the Prime Mouse is suitable for all common grip types, i.e. palm, finger and claw grip.
Personally, the mouse felt very good in my hand in the Palm Grip, all buttons were easy to reach and had a comfortable position. So that you can make some sense of this statement, here is the size of my right hand in a relaxed position with my thumb extended:
A side effect of the light weight is that the Prime almost feels a little cheap. High-pitched, slightly hollow-sounding clicks then reinforce this effect. But we’ll get to the noises later, first another peculiarity of this mouse: The mechanics and springs of the mouse buttons. Built in are completely new Steelseries Prestige OM switches, which use a much larger spring and laser for triggering.
If you want to learn more about it, you can read the short article from Steelseries. With a life span of 100 million clicks, this is double that of the frequently used Omron switches, for example. This statement can’t really be tested in a review, we will only find out in a few years if it is true.
