Board analysis and power supply
AMD has saved a bit on the PCB, which is much simpler than the RX 6800 and RX 6800XT. However, well equalized hotspots are also a plus point this time, even if the very decent input filtering with a real LC filter (low-pass) is omitted and only longitudinal coils (chokes) are used. With a 35217 from International Rectifier AMD relies on a rather average PWM controller, which drives the 7 phases for VDDC_GFX of the RX 6700 XT and generates the two phases for VDDCR_SOC.
The rather inexpensive PowerStages SiC649A from Vishay (50 Amps max.) do not offer a true MOSFET DCR, but at least a temperature protection circuit and a readout output. You use them for all controllers, by the way. The voltage range for VDDC_GFX is between 0.7 and maximum 1.2 Volt, whereby the maximum value can never be exceeded by the end user without special firmware and software.
In parallel, an NCP 81022N from On Semi is used to generate other partial voltages such as one phase for VDD_MEM and one phase for VDDCI_MEM, resulting in a total of 11 phases for the various main voltages, all of which are equipped with the same PowerStages.
For input smoothing one coil with 560 mH is used for the 8-pin and the 6-pin connector as well as for the PEG motherboard slot. You can also see the six 2GB GDDR6 memory modules with Samsung’s 12Gbps. That’s about as exciting as it gets.
Radiator and disassembly
The front is characterized by the two 8.5 cm fans with 9 rotor blades each, which act quite quietly. There are no more special features to observe from above for the time being.
The disassembly is simple. After unscrewing the backplate and GPU screws, the cooler can also be removed quite easily. All you have to do is disconnect the fan cables and the RGB lifelines. The very soft pads on the memory modules and VRM do their job, but are not top shelf. We see a total of three flattened 6mm heatpipes made of copper composite material placed above the GPU on the heatsink. The memory is cooled by the 1 mm thick pads, the voltage converter at the cooler and the coils too.
The now opened backside shows the three heatpipes once again.
On the back you can find a backplate made of light metal, but without any cooling function.
