It’s nice to see that NVIDIA seems to be actively involved in this, or that you’ve reported on your reading of the catchy social media content, because the hotspot that I found in the launch article about the graphics card, I discussed again later:
GDDR6X at its limit? Over 100 degrees measured in the chip with the GeForce RTX 3080 FE!
The picture looked quite strange, because especially at the hottest point the backplate was not actively integrated into the cooling system. I’m taking another infrared reading to remind you…
… and as a result the temperatures of the hot spot on the GDDR6X memory:
If you look at how NVIDIA applied the pads (and where they didn’t), you’re not really surprised:
Simple pad mod for the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition lowers the GDDR6X temperature by 8 degrees
Thereupon I converted the cooling actively and made a Pad-Mod, which many users of the GeForce RTX 3080 FE probably also converted in exactly the same way and/or intended and have this.
Interestingly, NVIDIA never contacted us, but secretly adapted the production. In addition also an entry on reddit fits, which shows the GeForce RTX 3080 FE of the new production starting from at the beginning of October:
So from that point of view we did everything right. Maybe I’ll get a green spatula for the collection, if it doesn’t work out with a thank you. After all, I will have to bake speculoos again soon, because the old one is running out. 🙂
